Nature Hack Task One

Once you have assessed your environment post some before pictures, if you can't, tell us a bit about it and how you would like to change it.

As you know I'm not allowed to take pictures in my setting however I'm planning on going in for a Saturday to thoroughly clean up and re-organise my indoor learning space.

This is my living room space. I change it daily because of the age of children I have. This was a day when I had 3 1 year old boys, they are all relatively new to my setting so I am observing them to find their interest and what they enjoy to explore with. When I look at this picture I find it a bit dull and not exciting enough but then I don’t want to fill the space with to many items to over stimulate them. Looking forward to seeing the next few days on learning how to enhance my setting with nature.

Here are photos of my small world/ construction area. I'm going to focus on this in particular during this week, as it is one of the most loved and used areas of my classroom.

I want to bring a lot more nature and open-ended learning into this area. I have some natural objects inside the white drawers there but they don't get explored and used enough, so I'm going to bring them out onto the shelves and floor to be more accessible and rotate them with new objects more often to keep children excited. I'm not currently in a position in my workplace to decide to permanently remove toys, but I'm definitely finding ways to declutter and to store more items to put them into rotation so there are far fewer out at a time. I've been introducing loose parts to the children on a small scale around the environment and I will now start to incorporate these into the area more permanently, replacing some of the less flexible and less engaging construction resources that are there now.

I will rotate resources every 4 weeks plus introduce more mirrors to increase natural light.

These are some before pictures of our setting before we looked at how to improve our environment and introduce more natural light and natural materials. We also looked at the clutter and plastic toys to see how this could be improved.

I have a small Kindergarten room with 22 students (two severe disabilities) and I just didn't have enough space. The back corner was my desk and the 'putting things out of the way' space but it just had to go so I removed my desk (just learning how to do without it and it's not ideal but it was necessary) and rearrange the space so I now have a dedicated construction/building area. I'll post the after photo next.

I had to rearrange our bag locker spaces and brought the table into a clearer space. It was time to change up the low table to the right. The room feels much more open now and the construction area is very well loved and always busy.
